A brief history of the Gunn Runners
Originally set up by Alan Fitzgerald, Sue Grayson & Jane Cameron in February 2003, the Gunn Runners met at the Gunn Island Hotel every Tuesday night ~630pm for a simple 'Run & a Beer'. An Auckland running group had a similar premise. Whether you're a seasoned runner or just starting to do some regular social exercise Gunn Runners appeals to all offering a 3km or 5km run. Every week you can plot your progress against the published times. The small group has evolved into a fundraising social group suppporting events that support local charities and have the obligatory catch-up after the run. Weekends away, movie nights, vineyard tours, bowling and Friday night drinks have also followed. There is also a Last Pub of the Month pub crawl where three bars in close proximity to each other are chosen in different parts of town. Dinner is had at one of the bars. Again a quiet night can be turned around for Melbourne’s bars as the Gunnies descend. The Gunn Runners have proved a great hit with visitors to town as well. International newcomers know that social running groups are a great way to break the ice and meet the locals. Some come along just to set their mark, sprinting a record time which is kept on the website. So in days when busy professionals yearn for exercise and a chance to expand their social network, the Gunnies have certainly filled a niche. Some Gunnies have married, are engaged and even gone on to produce little Gunnies!A longer history>
